Road Trip to Ft Lauderdale: Crazy Drivers, Family Dinner, and Ocean Views

On an ordinary Wednesday, our son returned to the mainland from the Florida Keys to start a mini-vacation with his friends in Fort Lauderdale. A quick trip to join them for dinner seemed perfect, especially since the three-hour drive on Florida's turnpike from Orlando isn't very far.

Florida is vast, and you can access different areas of the state within that timeframe. However, the true challenge lies not in the distance but in contending with the infamous South Florida drivers. Renowned for their reckless speed, weaving, and frequent lane changes, navigating this region demands constant alertness and a steady hand on the steering wheel.

However, recent legislative changes in Florida bring some hope. Laws now mandate that driving over 100 miles per hour can lead to arrest. This might lead to a reduction in reckless driving and make our journey a bit safer in the future.

We made the decision to go on the trip just the night before. Our strategy was to begin our work early, hitting the road in time to arrive at our destination by dinner. As a passenger, I was able to continue working thanks to excellent cell service and a reliable internet connection. The only preparation for the drive was making sure we had a full tank of gas, so we didn't need to stop until we arrived.

Although our drive started smoothly, we knew that approaching South Florida meant we would have to stay alert. The fear of crazy drivers isn't just rumors; it’s a reality. Cars zipped past us, showcasing alarming speed and erratic lane changes. Keeping an eye on the rearview mirror was essential as we had learned from past trips these drivers often make sudden lane changes at the most unexpected times and without warning.

Lucky Fish

We arrived in Fort Lauderdale, gathered our crew, then ventured to Dania Beach to visit a perfect waterside restaurant called Lucky Fish (which came highly recommended). This beachfront spot provided beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and beachgoers enjoying in the water. To our surprise, we even observed a small group of swimmers who needed to be rescued after their floats drifted too far into the ocean. Thankfully, the Coast Guard safely brought the swimmers back to shore, and it's another reminder to stay aware of beach currents to keep from floating away.

As dinner wrapped up and the full moon came out, we decided to walk off some of the meal. The July weather was perfect and thanks to a sea breeze, not very hot. It was especially nice because we were able to admire the many motor yachts situated in their slips at the Dania Beach Marina and there was even a pirate ship! This marina was exceptionally clean and secure, and the boaters were lucky to have so many dining and entertainment options within walking distance.

Once we parted ways for the night, the trip back was significantly calmer in the darkness. The speedy drivers had already returned home, leaving just a handful of cars on the highway. We only needed to be cautious of lane closures due to road construction and of a few reckless drivers who chose to text while driving.

All in all, we arrived home just as the day came to a close and this trip was a lovely reminder that occasionally, an impromptu drive is worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

If you consider a quick getaway from Central Florida, there are so many destination you can reach on a tankful of gas. Navigating the highways, combined with Florida’s beautiful coastline, makes for an incredible adventure. Remember, while the roads may be hectic, dinner with a stunning view awaits. Buckle up, stay alert, and enjoy every moment of the ride!
